Cosmetic Crown

A crown (or cap) is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface, restoring its original shape and size. The crown protects and strengthens tooth structure that cannot be restored with fillings or another type of restoration.

While there are several crown types, porcelain (tooth-colored) crowns are the most popular because they resemble natural teeth. Highly durable, they will last many years but like most dental restorations, they eventually need to be replaced. Porcelain crowns are made to match the shape, size, and color or your teeth, giving you a natural, long-lasting beautiful smile.

Reasons for crowns:
• Broken or fractured teeth
• Cosmetic enhancement
• Decayed teeth
• Fractured fillings
• Large fillings
• Tooth develops a root canal

Porcelain Veneers (also Laminates)

Veneers are very thin pieces of durable, tooth shaped porcelain that are custom made (for shape and color) by a professional dental laboratory.  They are bonded onto the front of teeth to create a beautiful and attractive smile. Veneers can completely reshape your teeth and smile. They are durable and will last many years, giving you a beautiful, long-lasting smile.

Porcelain Veneer FAQs

1. Does the porcelain veneer cover the entire tooth?

A porcelain veneer generally covers just the tooth’s front and top.

2. When is a porcelain veneer the best choice of treatment?

Porcelain veneers are often the best treatment to fill spaces between teeth, lengthen small or misshapen teeth, or whiten stained and darkened teeth.

3. Are there other advantages to porcelain veneers?

When teeth are chipped or beginning to wear, porcelain veneers can protect them from further damage and restore their original appearance.

4. How does the porcelain veneer treatment work? How many appointments?

It takes two or more appointments to restore teeth with porcelain veneers. At the first appointment, the doctor shapes and lightly roughens the surface of the teeth. Impressions are then taken by the doctor who uses them to make exact working models of the mouth. During the second appointment, the prepared teeth are cleaned and polished. The dentist then uses a special adhesive to bond the porcelain veneers to the teeth.

5. How long do porcelain veneers last?

Porcelain veneers last between 10 and 20 years. Porcelain is a strong, highly resilient material that will not stain or wear from brushing. And the thin facade of porcelain that is bonded to the enamel becomes extremely strong-and durable!

Will my teeth stay whitened forever?

Generally, immediately after whitening, color fades slightly, then remains stable for six months to a year (sometimes longer). It is recommended that you maintain results by touching-up your smile every 4-6 months with 1 or 2 applications.

You should maintain your teeth to keep their brightness and shine. Visit your dentist regularly and avoid foods and activities that darken teeth (such as coffee, alcohol, sugar and smoking). Consistently use of “Take-home Whitening” as recommended also helps keep your smile bright and beautiful.

Will whitening gel whiten my veneers, caps (crowns) and tooth-colored fillings?

Teeth whitening only works on natural tooth structures. This means all dental work (including but not limited to tooth-colored fillings, veneers, crowns, and bridges) will NOT whiten. If you have these types of dental work, they should be replaced to match newly whitened teeth.

Are there side effects of teeth whitening?

All whitening gels cause some degree of tooth sensitivity which can cause discomfort. This is normal and an expected side effect. If you experience uncomfortable sensitivity, stop using teeth whitening for a few days and start again when sensitivity diminishes. Clinical studies indicate bleaching under the supervision of a dental professional is safe for both teeth and gums.
